Why This Matters
Clear expectations can help candidates. The challenge for employers is to preserve hiring integrity without making honest applicants feel distrusted.
Core Finding
A webinar by industry-leading HireVue and HR Tech thought leader, the Josh Bersin Company, presents cheating prevention and candidate trust as goals that must be addressed together.
For an interviewee, a polished answer is not, by itself, proof of ability. The useful question is whether the candidate can show job-relevant skills through their own experience and responses. For employers, the task is to create a process that can evaluate those skills while making interviewing rules understandable.
Takeaway
Candidates can focus on preparing real examples and explaining their own reasoning, while checking the employer’s guidance on permitted AI use. Employers can make the process more trustworthy by stating expectations clearly and tying evaluations to skills relevant to the role.
The larger point is that AI changes how hiring works, but trust still depends on people understanding the process and having a fair chance to demonstrate what they can do. Here are some ways employers mitigate deceptive candidate presentations:
- Government ID verfication: Although it might not be completely legal, employers require the candidate to present a government document with the candidate's picture.
- Location signals: Detecting location-masking tools such as a VPN, an affinity with known suspicious locations, and whether the IP address is residential or public.
- Disable copy & paste: To eliminate the abilty to enter generated text into response windows.
- Browser focus tracking: If focus is lost, then there is a higher likelihood an interviewee is switching tabs, minimizing tabs, and/or opening new browsers.
- 360 degree room scan: This is the most instrusive check. It asks the interviewee to make a sweep of their room with their camera to display their surroundings and demonstrate they don't have multiple browsers or a helping companion.
- Liveness check: A term for all detection features.
- Likelihood of AI-generated content being used
Verfication tools are getting more sophisticated and are less obvious in an effort to keep a desirable, comfortable candidate experience.
