Why doesn't Storied Self supply a script to read like other interview assistance sites?
Meaning-making requires introspection. In those moments, an individual speaks more haltingly to make sense of a story. They tend to gaze at the furthest distance available, such as the corner of a room or out a window. Built-in proctoring systems can detect these glances and note exceptions, because it's not natural to maintain continuous eye contact when being reflective. For these reasons, it's best to answer without a script.
If AI interview vendors can already distinguish between candidates without their responses being extended, why is it important to make longer responses?
AI interview platforms rank job candidates. So, they need to distinguish between them. Longer answers provide more language to analyze. Now, these platforms have interactive agents that probe with follow-up questions to obtain longer responses. They can pick up on your non-verbal characteristics. Sometimes, that might be awkward. So, if you can speak long enough the first time, you might avoid a follow-up question.
Can AI interviewers know that my story is not describing a particular moment and is generalizing instead?
Yes. It's not difficult for AI to detect a sequence of events being described. It looks for transition words (First..., Then...) and past tense. It can also detect concrete details, with a good degree of validity (See Germanier et al, 2025). Unfortunately, many interviewees do not pay attention to the interview question when it asks, “Tell me about a time…” and they provide general answers or motivating values. This type of response might reduce the behavioral indications the algorithm wants to analyze.
How do Storied Self’s coaching services relate to an AI interview's scoring factors?
When you formalize your preferences, favorites, and peak moments, you reveal a life theme. You can extrapolate from it to explain how a job is authentic to you.. This will be increasingly important to finding a job in the future. Motivation, attitude, emotional intelligence, and personality are increasingly the dominant qualifiers for many jobs. In coaching sessions, we work with candidates to locate that theme. It can be a profound experience, but it's also practical for the interview process.
What are the communication skills needed for a good response?
Communication is the foundation for a good response to behavior-based questions. Your stories should have these six elements.
- Delivering clear responses
- Using proper grammar
- Demonstrates sharing information openly
- Checking for understanding
- Engaging others
- Personalizing your message to the audience
What are the organic elements that make up an algorithmic model?
There are three elements.
- Good communication skills, as described above, are the foundation of many of the other competencies.
- The essence of the competencies needed for the position. They are specific to the employer. You won’t know what they are beforehand.
- Motivations, attitudes, and personality. Psychology has defined these over time. AI Interview vendors use different mixes of them. One source is the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC). It is a protocol for using a person’s words to describe their traits.
These elements are picked up organically, meaning without the algorithm seeking keywords. For example, if a person needs to be humble for a job, they obviously can't declare it. No one is truly humble if they say they are. Instead, they demonstrate it by saying something like, "I paused to listen to the other person's concerns." The interviewee’s behavior in that moment gives clues to their traits
What aspects of analytical AI/data science relate to how a response is evaluated?
Top-k is a factor in analytical AI relevant to AI interviews. Its purpose is to limit the statistical distribution to a narrower band. In practical terms, it helps distinguish interviewees in a ranking. An I-O psychologist who is creating a model might adjust the top-k to eliminate lexical features that merely correlate with better responses but are not predictive of job performance.
Sometimes, I might experience an AI interview which severely limits my response time. What should I do in that case?
A smaller length of response time in the question-response sequence limits your ability to extend your response. Maximize it as best as you can. There are diminishing returns to longer answers anyway. After 130 seconds, the benefit to your score by speaking longer will decrease. Although employers determine the length of the response window, most vendors don't provide a setting for less than two minutes.
Why are soft skills gaining more prominence than hard skills and knowledge as qualifying factors for a job?
The short answer is because everything evolves to become more complex. The more accurate response is that knowledge is increasingly embedded into business software. So, expertise has a reduced value. Language skills are increasingly automated. On the other hand, soft skills represent the uniquely human contribution to the workplace. As automation advances, employers will reallocate tasks and responsibilities. Job candidates with learning agility will be favored. The AI interview vendors often label this as potential or the individual’s ability to adapt to change.
